Drummer Jimmy Chamberlin leaves The Smashing Pumpkins [Mar. 20th, 2009|11:56 pm]
Billy Corgan
The SMASHING PUMPKINS' guitarist, singer, songwriter and founding member Billy Corgan has announced that drummer Jimmy Chamberlin has left the group. Chamberlin joined the band Corgan founded in Chicago in 1988 and played on all their albums except Adore (1998). Corgan will continue to write and record as the SMASHING PUMPKINS with plans to head into the studio this spring.

By now you have heard the news of my departure from the Smashing Pumpkins. I will say, without going into any unnecessary details that this represents a positive move forward for me. I can no longer commit all of my energy into something that I don’t fully possess. I won’t pretend I’m into something I’m not. I won’t do it to myself, you the fan, or my former partner. I can’t just, “Cash the check” so to speak. Music is my life. It is sacred. It deserves the highest commitment at every level and the Pumpkins are certainly no different. I’m sorry but it really IS that simple. There is no drama, bad blood, or anything else but a full commitment to music. My best goes out to Billy and I’m glad he has chosen to continue under the name. It is his right. I will continue to make music with the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex as well as pursuing other musical interests. I feel that I have a long way to go and a lot to give. Thanks to everyone for your kind words and support through all of this. I am constantly humbled by all of you! It is an honor and a privilege to play music for a living and I don’t take it for granted not even for a second.

Stay tuned……. JC

makes me wonder what's going on with Jimmy.. hope he's okay. So many maybe's... maybe he wants to do his own project again, maybe he wants to go just get out of the circus, maybe he doesn't like the direction/style of SP. *shrug* *sigh* RIP the classic SP that I love.

That's too bad. I'm really fond of Jimmy's work, so I'll be looking forward to whatever he does next. Any details we can be given concerning why he left?

One wonders how it can still be The Smashing Pumpkins now that 3/4 of the original band members have departed. To say that it can still be called The Smashing Pumpkins without them seems to say they were of no value when they were with the band.

Jimmy is one of the most underrated drummers of the era. In an interview in Modern Drummer a couple years ago, he said he warmed up every day to Stick Control (probably the first book for every student; ex1: RLRL RLRL..). And it shows. His touch and technique go a long way to supporting the wall of guitars sound. His style was so universal, if he had just left a wedding and barmitzvah band, I'd say 'his touch and technique go a long way to supporting the sound..' His drum playing is akin to Edge's guitar playing: he doesn't play a million notes a minute, but it's always the right note. I learn something from him every time I listen to a SP song. He plays to the song. That's the highest compliment you can give to a drummer.

I know there's a perception that SP have morphed into just a vehicle for BC's creativity, but Jimmy's work on Zeitgeist was a masterpiece. I feel for the next guy who is going to have to contribute something original.

I hope all is well with Jimmy, and he continues to do great work. peace.

The Smashing Pumpkins have been done since 2000. They never really came back.
Man, if only Zwan had longevity...

oh thats unfortunate. oh well. Good luck to Jimmy on all his future endeavors.
To me Smashing Pumpkins=Billy Corgan just as much as Trent Reznor= Nine Inch Nails. Theres been many changes in great personnel in both bands-but still the mastermind sits at the helm. Cant wait to hear what's next.;D

"Eye" and "The Beginning is the End of The Beginning" is two of my most favorite SP songs EVAR. If Billy returns to this formula and applied it to some new stuff for an entire album-I would be one happy camper. Bring on the darkness Billy! ;)
