Jimmy's Love Letters .3
Greetings! Just a quick note to say that things are still in orbit around Planet Pumpkin. Almost finished with drums and then we're cutting BC loose to work his magic. Its great to see a bit of light at the end of a long musical tunnel. I definitely feel proud and privileged to be a part of this journey. I hope you are ready........... We are! JC

i'm really hoping that this one, when it does come out, is better than machina... i want to feel like you guys are actually trying this time & not just throwing a bunch of shit together... not saying that machina was not from the heart but come on, it could've been better... it was way too random & forced... maybe i'm expecting too much from you guys but whatever. a little criticism can be a good thing.

are you freaking kidding?

MACHINA was brilliant.

akkk... I guess there is just no accounting for taste. However, if you had looked into that album at all, you would know not to suggest it was just thrown together. Whether you like the music on machina or not, you cannot say "it was too random and forced" if you look deeply into the piece.

Machina was the pumpkin's most spectacular work, it had the best combination of concept, artwork and music of any of the albums. It shows the band's maturity. The sound is quite different from earlier albums, which may make it more difficult for people who like the classic pumpkin's sound to identify with, however, it does not backtrack on quality.

Bands need to change their sound and evolve or they become the same static junk that we hear on the radiowaves everyday. The pumpkins did that with machina. I did not become a pumpkins fan until after machina had come out. To hear that the band which blew my mind more than any other band ever has is back making music, just thrills me. I've watched all along, with Billy's poetry, solo work and Zwan... but this really was the moment I was waiting for... even if the original line up cannot be completed.

I agree, I enjoyed machina. I can't really see how any smashing pumpkins fan could diss it.

as a preface, i great enjoy machina as well. now, that said:

most of the fans who dislike machine do so because of the production and the weirdness that is(was?) the machina mystery. the "loud at any volume" wall of sound is just not....pleasant. not compared to previous works, not compared to anything. the production on machina is downright painful in places and parts of machina II are pretty much unlistenable. most people who diss the album still rave about the songs (crying tree of mercury aside) - at least the arising tour versions. as for the mystery.... yeah i got nothing on that.

exactly. the taste thing. and personally i kinda dug the machina mystera. to a point.

but if you'd been a fan since the beginning, this mystery thing was Really Bloody Weird. the animations were just silly, the story was good...ish. it was just very grandiose for a band known for being grandiose and so absurd that it was very difficult to get behind. you have to keep in mind it was coming off the relative minimlism of adore as well.

*shrug*
my point, not everyone could drink the machina-mystery-kool-aid.

see...

i came from no where

a dance queen with a billion dreams written in dead leaves

but machina... the mystery... said something no other work had... it evoked the hope i felt in that void.. it gave me a reason to belive...

when i dance i feel that feeling

I think you also have to account for different tastes. I do enjoy Machina, and I did enjoy the idea of the Pumpkins creating a concept album and complete experience with a story and artwork associated with it. However, that endeavor isn't easily accessible to most people. People listening to popular rock generally don't want a rock opera, they want a rock album. Say what you like, Smashing Pumpkins ARE popular rock. I appreciate Machina for what it is artistically and intellecutally but personally *I* much prefer the good ol'days of Siamese Dream and Pisces Iscariot.

I think the whole thing, including the bearable parts of the commercial Machina, gets a lot better without that story. That stupid story made me lose a lot of faith in Billy Corgan. Some things are better left hinted at, not explicitly spelled out, where they tend to turn juvenile.

i agree completely.

i always wondered if the contest was really just a way to get out of this rather embarrassing hole corgan had found himself in. i mean, who would want to have to explain that juvenile story themselves - much better to let someone else do it.

That's a great way of describing it - "loud at any volume".

It isn't pleasant. Parts of Machina II are downright unbearable... White Spyder anyone?

I agree. Machina, the commecially released one, is an overproduced atrocity. Quality control clearly went out the window there. Machina II is as good as anyting else they've done, which means unfuckingbeleivably amazing. I always wondered if they did this on purpouse.

I could pontificate, but there's no reason. Y'all gonna like whatcha like.

the material on machina II is absolutely as good as anything else they've done - for the most part. but the production.... a perfect example of this is white spyder. that track could have been so much more if it just wasn't so atrociously produced.

All this being said I am bracing myself for ultimate suckage. Anyone else who had to suffer through the bad rave that was BC's solo tour would be too. Sry2say.

I am also worried. But having been to billy's secret acoustic show in Sydney, I can say that the solo tour wasn't all bad. His Chicago songs are amazing-- really raw and a bit folky/bluesy. I wish he'd go in that direction, instead of trying to be a super rock god again.

You guys realize Jimmy's not reading this, right?

Somebody started the BillyCorgan LJ as a mirror for the posts Billy was putting up on Myspace a while back. Billy and Jimmy ARE involved over there, so comment your heart out, but this LJ is just a mirror for LJ users.

Yeah, but I like to discuss it with people on LJ as well. I think Myspace is a tool of Satan to be honest.
